Mediation may be your solution! Mediation is an alternative method of dispute resolution that can help you and your loved ones solve complex legal issues without extensive litigation. Mediation is a collaborative approach to resolving disputes using the help of an impartial, third party called a mediator.
A Mediator is a neutral-meaning not in favor of either party. In mediation, the Mediator can help facilitate helpful, respectful negotiation with the ultimate goal of settling your case!
In family law cases, specifically custody issues and divorce, the State of Utah generally requires mediation take place before going to a trial. Mediation may take place with all of the parties in one room, or in separate rooms. Each party may be represented by their own counsel. In other circumstances, mediation may take place before ever going to court in order to prevent extensive litigation and legal fees.
Mediation is confidential, meaning that what takes place in mediation, stays in mediation! The mediator may not be subpoenaed into court and the parties may not use what happens in mediation as evidence in a trial.
Michael Ted Thornock
Our firm employs one of the few Spanish-speaking mediators in the State, Michael Ted Thornock. Mr. Thornock is Master Mediator and Domestic Mentor on both the Basic and Divorce Rosters with the State of Utah. Michael has taught mediation as an Adjunct at the University of Utah and is on the Board at Utah Dispute Resolution.

Mediation is often very expensive. While some mediators charge several hundred dollars for mediation, Mr. Thornock charges affordable rates and is willing to negotiate with the parties on price, depending on the circumstances. Mr. Thornock is a personable, understanding mediator with knowledge of many different complex areas of the law.
